BBC Video Journalist helping creators tell compelling true stories
Private informationDescription
I’m Ben Derico — a video producer and journalist in San Francisco. I’ve worked as a staff Video Journalist with BBC News and produced for The Intercept, CNN, The Washington Post, and Público, Portugal’s largest newspaper, as well.
Now I'm taking my skills making non-fiction content for millions of news viewers around the globe to help content creators make compelling, engaging stories.
I shoot, edit, animate, write, and report. I love telling stories that help explain the world in clear, easy-to-follow terms. My reporting tends to focus on science and technology, but ive made sports, arts, culture, and climate videos over the years as well
Before working in journalism, I spent a decade as a commercial director. I crafted edits on big budget ads, filmed beautiful frames for branded content projects, and produced engaging online content for social media.
I have a master’s from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and I've shown my independent documentary work at festivals around the US and the world.
I work in English, Spanish, and Portuguese

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is opening in Chile’s Atacama Desert. It’s home to the largest digital camera ever made, with the goal of mapping the entire night sky in more detail than ever before.
I pitched this story to the South America correspondent, Ione Wells, and joined her in Chile as a Video Journalist. I managed all contact with our contributors, filmed, edited, colored, and mixed every frame of this video which aired across the BBC News Channels globally
