During WWII Pirot, town in South East of Serbia, was occupied by Bulgaria, allay of Nazi Germany. Jewish Community in Pirot was accepted and respected in Pirot before the war, but on March 13th 1943 Bulgarians arrested more than hundred Jewish people and deported them in concentration camp of Treblinka. Luckily, not all Jews from Pirot were taken from city – citizens of Pirot rescued and kept safe a large number of Jewish children. One of survivors is protagonist of this documentary, neurosurgeon Tuvi Jusefovich.
In A Story of the Cherry Tree Tuvi Jusefovich evokes memories about his childhood in Pirot, WWII, achieving MD in Belgrade and moving to Israel, building respectable career in Beersheba hospital and happy family life crowned with a bunch of grandchildren. At the same, that is film about humanity, coexistence and forgiving – in despite of suffer and loose of the closest during WWII, Tuvi Jusefovich didn’t feel the hate in his old age.
A Story of the Cherry Tree isn’t homage only to Tuvi Jusevovich (sadly, he had passed away when this film was in post-production), but also to people from Jewish community from Pirot during WWII and their neighbors who risked their life to save at least some of their fellow citizens. A Story of the Cherry Tree was filmed at several locations in Serbia and Israel.
